FAQ

  • When does this course open /end?

    It opens April 1st, 2025. All assignments must be submitted by June 20th, 2025, 5pm HST for our instructor's review and APPROVED & uploaded onto Learnsoft before June 27th to receive credits. Hawaii DOE's Advance Professional Learning Program officer will complete the portfolio review by July 27th and grant three credits shortly after. The course is self-paced. You can start learning any time after the section opening day and complete the course as quickly as you like.

  • Do I need to teach during summer to complete the course work?

    No. As long as you have a minimum of three students you can practice the teaching strategies with, and collect work samples from, you can complete all requirements. You maybe able to finish all course work before the end of May. Or you could ask a friend who is teaching a summer program if you could teach three lessons.

  • I am a resource teacher / counselor and I don't have my own class. Can I still complete the course?

    Yes, we welcome all types of educators. As long as you have a minimum of three students you can practice the teaching strategies with, you can complete all requirements.

  • Is this course all online? Does it require any live virtual meeting?

    Our course is 100% online and there are no virtual meetings. Yet, our course offers ways to connect with other participants for people who are interested in building a network. The instructors are also available to support you. We will respond to your question usually within 24 hours.

Cindy Staples

Cindy Staples is a TESOL-certified EL teacher currently teaching ELLs at a HIDOE elementary school in the Leeward district on Oahu. While serving as a member of the Hawaii State EL Leadership Team, Cindy was involved in developing a comprehensive EL Success Initiative plan for the state to impact instruction in all content areas and across all grade levels. She has a Master's Degree in Teaching and a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology, where she studied human motivation and emotion and the role that conditioning plays in human behavior.

Jenni Uchida

Jenni Uchida is currently a HIDOE elementary school principal in the Kalihi neighborhood of Oahu, where she also received training as a middle school administrator. In collaboration with teachers, counselors, and families, she spends much of her days guiding students to develop a sense of well-being & responsibility and supporting teachers. Before her principalship, Jenni served as an academic coach and a classroom teacher for many years in Hawaii.

    Payment is due one day before the course start date. Refunds will only be provided to participants who submit their refund requests in writing no later than fourteen days (two weeks) prior to the official start date of their course.
